My hunny knows just how much I LOVE hummingbirds…. I’m not sure why I love them so much but I can remember out my Aunt Tootsie’s big back window my Uncle Jack and her would feed them nectar and there would be hundreds (well ok – maybe when you’re eight, 10 hummingbirds seem like hundreds) buzzing around outside. Beautiful and bright! They were so close we could almost touch them if there wasn’t a glass window and they weren’t so FAST!!
They are tiny and quick. Mystical and magical. They can’t walk or hop but only fly with their little wings flapping 70 times per second. They can hear better than a human and see farther than us….they can also see ultraviolet light…and a hummingbird must consume approximately 1/2 of its weight in sugar daily, and the average hummingbird feeds 5-8 times per hour…..sounds like a lil super hero fairy to me! 🙂
I wanted one as a pet but since they’re not really meant to be kept inside Jordan found me a glass one on his baseball travels and the miracle is that it made it home from the flight with it’s little beak still in tact! Haha! 🙂
Now I love hummingbirds because they remind me of him and no matter where they go (my umpire or my hummingbirds) every season they will ALWAYS come back to where the sweet nectar of food is….and they’ll bring their buddies (the hummingbirds and my umpire) 😉 haha! Remember that saying “The way to a man’s heart is through good food in his belly?” Well….hummingbirds have adapted that mentality as well!
I LOVE my hummingbird pet and I also LOVE watching the real ones outside my kitchen window when it’s time for them to be in the air. March-October my hummingbirds keep me company when my hunny is away! Maybe this year I’ll be able to catch a real one with my lens…..
